2007 is off to a rockin' start as Director Matt Singletary, Set Designer Brad Sauper, Stage Manager Adrienne Guldin, and Actress Kay Capasso joined Technical Director Rodger Kurth to begin the build of "Stop Kiss" on the West Stage. This show promises to be a dramatic tour de force of fear and desire, a compelling tale of two young women whose awkward friendship becomes something more- until an obscene act of violence changes their lives forever. Show opens January 21st, with previews beginning January 16th, and runs until March 3, 2007.

Producer Mike Menendian will be happy to know that we got a door flat up and working today, a crossover wall removed, painting/priming started, and I only need to spend about $20.00 at the Hardware tomorrow.

The set for Diner Tales, a new play by Tim Joyce, directed by Chuck Spencer, has just been completed. This time I built a restaurant. I'm sure all those actors and actresses feel right at home in it.

Next up for Raven, are the Jefferson Citations on 6/5/06. Dancing at Lughnasa is up for Production and Set, Mike Menendian is up for direction, and Millie Hurley-Spencer is up for supporting actress. Last year, we got the Citation for Set and Liz Fletcher got an actress Citation for her portrayal of Blanche in Streetcar Named Desire. Looking forward to bringing home a couple more this year.

Wound is Healing

During an altercation with a table saw in the scene shop at Chicago Shakespeare on April 28th, 2006, the saw threw a piece of plywood at Rodger Kurth. The wood was thrown so hard, it tore open flesh on Rodger's hand. Rodger was taken to the hospital where he was given four stitches after 6 hours of waiting in the Emergency room. (The hospital was not RUSH Pres.!). At this time, Rodger is pleased to report he has regained full use of his left thumb, the stitches have been removed, and the wound is healing well. He was also quite proud to see that his blood still shows through the black paint applied to the set peice on which he was working when the incident occurred. Henry IV, part 1 & 2 at Chicago Shakespeare has officially been christened.

Welcome to the new site of Chicago area Technical Director and Scenic Carpenter Rodger D. Kurth. I've built this site much the same way I build theatre sets: improv and engineering coming together. I learned improv as a young man at Western Michigan University in the Theatre program. I learned engineering through nearly ten years experience as a scenic carpenter and TD. Credits too numerous to mention. Currently, I serve as the TD for Raven Theatre on Chicago's North Side, and enjoy working for TheatreWit and chicago Shakespeare. I have other interests as well. Visit the links page for more of that. View recent projects in the image gallery.
